What Did I Just Walk Into?
Apparently, I opened a book and got handed eight different reasons to side-eye my own thoughts. Lovely. Just what I needed. My brain was already doing enough unpaid overtime without a story collection showing up with a flashlight and poking around in the cobwebs.
WHISPERING MINDS is a sharp, unsettling batch of short fiction that wastes no time getting weird. Each piece has its own flavor of “absolutely not,” and I mean that as a compliment. One minute you think you know where things are heading, and the next minute the story has taken a hard left into “well, that escalated.”
Here’s What Slapped:
I love a short story collection that does not feel like eight versions of the same idea wearing different shoes. This one gives variety, bite, and plenty of “excuse me, what now?” moments.
The shorter format works really well here. These stories get in, cause problems, make themselves memorable, and leave before they overstay their welcome. Honestly, efficient little chaos gremlins. Respect.
I also loved the bookish pieces, because apparently even my TBR pile is not safe anymore. As if unread books did not already judge me enough from the corner, now we are giving them motives. Rude, but fair.
The writing has a punchy, close-up feel that makes each story feel immediate. There is no wandering around for twelve chapters waiting for something to happen. Kristi Guthrie knows exactly where the sharp objects are and kindly points them at the reader.
What Could’ve Been Better:
For me, this was a five-star read. The only downside is that some stories ended and I wanted more, which is less of a complaint and more of me being greedy. I would absolutely read expanded versions of a few of these, especially the ones with a bookish nightmare angle because apparently I enjoy being personally attacked by fiction.
Perfect for Readers Who Love:
Short horror, psychological weirdness, supernatural touches, twisted ideas, quick reads with attitude, and stories that make you question whether your bookshelf is plotting something.
WHISPERING MINDS is a wicked little collection with teeth. It is quick to read, hard to put down, and perfect for readers who like their fiction strange, sharp, and just a little rude to their nervous system.
